San Salvador Spanish Galleon in Harbor: September 30 – October 10, 2016

Sail across the centuries and be part of history as the full-scale replica of the first European vessel to explore California’s coastline makes her maiden voyage. This fall Cabrillo’s San Salvador: The Pacific Heritage Tour will make multi-port stops along the West Coast, offering a variety of onshore exhibits and seagoing adventures.

Morro Bay kicks off its twelve-day visit on Thursday, September 29 with an escorted greeting – a bay and ocean sail coordinated by members of the Morro Bay Yacht Club, including tule boats newly crafted by the Salinan Tribe of Monterey and San Luis Obispo Counties. The San Salvador will then open for public tours and special events September 30 through October 9 at Morro Bay’s South T-Pier from 10 am – 6 pm daily, across the street from the newly established Maritime Museum of Morro Bay. Dockside exhibits include a labyrinth of text panels explaining San Salvador’s mission and about the people she encountered along the California Pacific Coast. Stepping on board visitors will be immersed in the year of 1542 as they wander the deck as though the crew left a few minutes earlier. Book tickets online at the Morro Bay Maritime Museum website: www.morrobaymaritime.org.

MMMB’s current fleet includes three vessels: the DSRV-2 Avalon, one of two rescue submarines built in 1971 by the U.S. Navy to compliment the nuclear fleet after the loss of 129 men in the USS Thresher disaster; the 1920s era tugboat Alma, drafted to patrol the waterways during World War II and called to action on December 23, 1941 to rescue survivors off the Union Oil tanker Montebello sunk by enemy torpedo off the coast of Cambria; and a U.S. Coast Guard Rollover Rescue Craft. Information is available at www.morrobaymaritime.org
