First Morro Bay Oyster Festival an Overwhelming Success by Jeanette Trompeter – Apparently Central Coasters love oysters. Because last Saturday’s first Oyster Festival in Morro Bay was a huge success. Organizers say they were planning to have 2,000-3,000 people show up, but they estimate the crowd at more like 4,000. The festival was at the Morro Bay Golf Course. “The concept of the Festival is really enticing,” said Jacqueline Delaney, Marketing Director for OPTIONS Family of Services, a non-profit organization that serves people with disabilities, and benefactor of the event. “The fresh oysters, the gourmet chefs, the entertainment, the local wines and beers, the event design, the sponsors, the location – it all worked together to bring in a large, diverse crowd.” Attendees consumed close to 20,000 oysters. Oyster preparations included Champagne and caviar oyster shooters, oyster paella, oyster gumbo, Oysters Rockefeller, and raw oysters. The “Aphrodisiac Lounge” proved to be very popular and featured artisanal cheeses, chocolates, fudge, ceviche and guacamole. The Festival was a “Zero Waste Event,” meaning organizers planned ahead to reduce solid waste, and set up recycling for cups, food scraps, and plates.
