We hope to inspire your groups to make a stop in Morro Bay!
California's Highway 1 runs uninterrupted from the rugged headlands of Big Sur to the laid-back coastal towns of the Central Coast — and somewhere in the middle, Morro Bay has been quietly waiting for you to arrive. Equidistant between Los Angeles and San Francisco, it's the rare road trip stop that works just as well as a starting point, a final destination, or simply a place to pull over and stay longer than planned.
MORRO BAY TO BIG SUR
Starting in Southern California, take Highway 101 North to San Luis Obispo, where you will find the Highway 1 connection. It’s only about 20 minutes to the vintage seaside haven of Morro Bay. Relax in harborside accommodations for the night before embarking further north.
Along Highway 1 from Morro Bay north, you will find the small beach town of Cayucos, a tiny town named Harmony, and the charming village of Cambria.
From here, your route becomes more entrancing as you pass Hearst Castle and the nearby elephant seal rookery in San Simeon.
Soon you will see the bluffs climb into cliffs as you continue north past Ragged Point and into the most dramatic stretch of the drive.
Enjoy the meeting of land and sea as you approach the heart of Big Sur.
Take your time to enjoy the renowned McWay Falls, the Henry Miller Memorial Library, and the stunning rivers and redwoods before continuing to your northern anchor of Carmel-by-the-Sea.
MONTEREY TO MORRO BAY
Starting in Northern California, make your way south from San Francisco. Jump west over to Highway 1 so you can go through Santa Cruz or stay on Highway 101 South before cutting over to the Monterey Peninsula.
From there, take Highway 1 from Monterey, through Carmel-by-the-Sea, and on to Big Sur. Allow yourself plenty of time to take in the dramatic vistas, coastal redwood splendor, and hairpin turns this road is known for.
Get lost in the Henry Miller Memorial Library or make a pit stop at Nepenthe for an ambrosia burger.
Continue south toward San Simeon, where you’ll pass the elephant seal rookery and the famous Hearst Castle.
Further south are the small towns of Cambria, Harmony, and Cayucos. Morro Bay is your next stop and overnight place to stay.
Once your Morro Bay harbor adventure is complete, San Luis Obispo and the Highway 101 connection are just a 20-minute drive away.
