About Hearst Castle
History and Architecture
The story of Hearst Castle begins in 1865 when George Hearst purchased 40,000 acres along the Central Coast. His son, William Randolph Hearst, inherited the land in 1919 and enlisted architect Julia Morgan to bring his vision of “La Cuesta Encantada," the Enchanted Hill, to life. Together, they transformed the ranch into a Mediterranean-style estate inspired by European castles and cathedrals. Construction spanned nearly three decades, resulting in 165 rooms and more than 120 acres of landscaped gardens, terraces, and pools.
Hearst Castle became a showcase for Hearst’s extensive art collection. Ancient Greek vases, Renaissance ceilings, Spanish tapestries, and Roman mosaics found their place alongside modern comforts. Though the estate was never fully completed, it stands today as a National Historic Landmark and California State Park, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the opulence of early 20th-century America.
